The heart of SY23
The castle ruins stand on the headland where the promenade turns, and the grounds work as the town park, with a playground, a putting green and benches facing the sea. Edward I began the castle in 1277, the Welsh burnt it in 1282 and Parliament pulled it down in 1649, so what is left is the gatehouse and two broken towers. Inside the walls is the Gorsedd stone circle set up for the 1916 National Eisteddfod, and on the seaward corner the war memorial looks straight out over Cardigan Bay.
