The heart of NP24
The Winding House is the engine house of Elliot Colliery, and the Thornewill and Warham steam winder inside is still in place, the one that lowered men down the east shaft from 1891 until the pit shut in 1967. It is the building New Tredegar and Brithdir are known by. It has been closed to the public for a few years while the council settles its next use, but the building and the engine are both still there.
