The heart of ME9
St Mary's stands above the A2 at Newington, its banded flint and ragstone tower visible from the main road through the district. It was built in the 1160s and is the oldest thing standing for miles around, and the stone in the car park is the one the Devil is supposed to have tripped over when he stole the bells. In a district of scattered villages between Sittingbourne and Rainham it is the marker everyone knows.
