The heart of KA4
St Sophia's is the red brick church on Bentinck Street with the round central tower and the conical tiled roof. The third Marquess of Bute paid for it in 1885 to 1886 and had Robert Rowand Anderson model it on Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, which is how a Byzantine church came to stand in an Ayrshire weaving town. It is still the working Catholic parish church, with mass on Sunday at 11:30.
