The heart of EH24
St Matthew's stands at the north end of Carnethie Street, built of brick in 1926 to a design by Archibald MacPherson and put up largely by villagers themselves, with the cloisters added in 1935. It was raised for the Catholic families the Lothian Coal Company brought in to work Whitehill pit, and it is built of the same brick as the miners' rows around it. The pit has been shut for decades and mass is still said there.
